BERLIN: ART SCENE

Berlin is loaded with art from old masters to modern. Even the Berlin Wall is a work of art as after it was taken down, artists and just plain folk were given the opportunity to paint on a section of the wall.

The Old Master Museum is known as the Germaldeggalerie. We got our fill of old masters and what we loved about this museum, was that there were very few visitors, so it was a joy to hang with Botticelli's, Vermeer’s, Rembrandts, Caravaggio’s, Raphael’s, and a broad spectrum of artists from the Renaissance through to the early 1900’s.

We took a separate tour to discover Berlin's street art with a guide named Finn. Originally from Ireland, Finn's accent was a pleasant surprise in Germany. He regularly teaches gender studies and, being trans himself, he has considerable expertise. Besides walking through the Kreuzberg neighborhood, known for its abundant large-scale graffiti, we also learned about the LGBTQ+ scene in Berlin.

Additionally, we visited a section of the Berlin Wall known as the East Side Gallery, which is a mile-long stretch covered in art.

We spent the morning in the Neue Gallery which was designed by Ludwigh Mies van der Rohe. The collection highlights modern 20th-century art including works displayed by Richter, Warhol, Rauschenberg, Picasso, Kandinsky, Kirchner and Miro.
